Adam Buckingham cleverly combines the need for young children to actively explore and extend their knowledge and skills using real equipment and materials, with the recycling and innovative use of ‘stuff’ or ‘trash’ that would have more likely ended up in our bins and dumps without this book.

Adam presents early childhood teachers and centres with a wealth of information, ideas and possibilities that would enable young children to play and work in truly engaging and stimulating ways and fun learning situations. At the same time children are also learning about recycling and waste reduction.  His work builds on the Montessori concept that children construct their knowledge from their experiences in the world, and also provides an environment where play becomes meaningful learning.

An experienced early childhood educator himself, Adam also takes into account safety issues, and ways centres can source and recycle the trash with little or no financial outlay, which often gives the parents and/or wider community a chance to be involved. Full colour photos show a range of resources, e.g. activity centres, natural materials, boxes and objects, which can be used in play, providing opportunities for physical and social growth, language acquisition, expression and success.
