The Weird Word Game is a card game which teaches kids to read and spell with ease - while they have fun!
It teaches students the basic rules they need to read unknown words in an step-by-step very structured and fun game. This teaching is especially important for students who want to know how things work – the scientists and mathematicians.
Kids make 'weird' words instead of real ones, so they learn to understand the sound-letter relationships (phonetics) instead of just memorising words (as in learning sight words). if students understand the letter-sound patterns, then remembering sight words is made considerably easier.
It makes hard work fun!
Kids get to use their imagination
They can see their own progress as they move up the 5 levels
They get lots of chance to practise the letter sound combinations away from the other demands text imposes on a reader.
They have to concentrate for only short periods of time
The competitiveness of the game drives kids to learn.
The Weird Word Game creator Anne Marsh (M.Ed, Dip.T.) has a Master's Degree in Education. The students in Anne's tuition centre have been playing the game for ten years, with huge results in reading and spelling ability.
It is a 2-player game and is for anyone aged 5+. It will also help students who are learning English as a second language.
