About this title.

A treaty was signed on February 6, 1840, at Waitangi between 46 local Maori chiefs and Captain William Hobson, who represented Queen Victoria and the British Government. It is to commemorate this very important event in New Zealand's history that we celebrate Waitangi Day every year. This book provides a colourful account of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and the events that led up to and followed the signing, as told by one of New Zealand's well-known authors, Kevin Boon. With both black and white and colour photos, and written in a way suitable for young people, this account explains why we celebrate or observe this day, its historic background and its significance for New Zealand and New Zealanders.
