Labour Day was first celebrated in 1899 to commemorate the establishment of the eight hour working day and the 48 hour working week, which was later reduced to 40 hours. This book oulines the origins of the Labour Day celebrations and gives a brief history of labour relations in New Zealand. With both black and white and colour photos, and written in a way suitable for young people, this account explains why we celebrate or observe this day, its historic background and its significance for New Zealand and New Zealanders.
