About this title.

Preparing and Presenting Speeches has been designed to assist year 5 and 6 students in the genre of public speaking.  It focuses on the rhetorical structure of a speech and the way it is communicated to an audience. It draws on the English oral language strand that refers to students “creating meaning for themselves and others with a focus on language purposes and audiences and the structures of texts.” (New Zealand draft curriculum 2006, p.15). It unpacks some of the language features of speeches and provides scaffolded materials for those with language needs.  Support material and ideas are provided for English Language Learners who are working well below their cohorts and therefore need extensive language input before we can expect output (Funding Assessment Guidelines 2005, p. 34).
Each task provides meaningful language input and language output that students are able to produce.  Tasks can be used with the whole class, a group of ESOL students or individuals.  Class teachers can select tasks that are appropriate to the needs of their students.
English Language learners are provided with additional support tasks that can assist them to: think through their ideas in their first language; call up prior knowledge; build vocabulary knowledge; have time to process the target language and to engage in communication with that language (Met, 1994).
