Bernard Freyberg commanded the New Zealand Army Division through a host of difficult and dangerous battles during the Second World War and won distinction, not only for himself, but for all New Zealanders. After the War he was appointed Governer General of New Zealand and both he and Lady Freyberg were very popular during their term of office.
