On the night of December 19, 1976 torrential rain fell on the city of Wellington. Rivers and streams overflowed their banks and by the next morning Wellington was cut off from the rest of the country by slips and floodwaters. These are stories of some of the worst disasters in New Zealand history explaining the causes of the disasters, the effects of these events upon the lives of people, the ways in which institutions and individuals coped with the disasters and some implications for the future.
