This is the legend of Ihenga, (the grandson of Tamatekapua, captain of the Te Arawa canoe) and his discovery of Lake Rotoiti and Lake Rotorua. His journey also takes him up a mountain to the marae Tuahu-o-te-Atua and the mountain which he named Ngongotaha. Ihenga discovered and named many other places, rivers, and lakes in the Bay of Plenty and the North Island.
Like Piatarihi Tui Yates other books, 'One Day a Taniwha' and 'Hoha te Taniwha' this book is illustrated by Katherine Quin Merewether.
The accompanying CD includes the story in both Maori and English, and waiata.
