George Nepia went to college in Hastings and within a few months he was selected for the Hawkes Bay rugby team, where he made a fine impression as a powerful kicker and a very strong tackler. In 1924 he was asked to play in the All Black trial where he was selected at fullback, a position he had never played before. It was the making of him.
